Last week! We'll draw winners on Friday! (1/5/07)

Happy New Year!

This new year rings the 7th year for CWAHM! How exciting! I can't wait to see what the Lord has in store for 2007. It's already shaping up to be a great year - I get to meet my fellow team members from CelebrateMoms.org in early March. They are an AMAZING group of women and I can't wait to meet them each in person!

Later that month I will attend the Mount Hermon Christian Writer's Conference. I was awarded a scholarhip to attend and am honored to be selected. I am thrilled to be attending - this will be my very first writer's conference - and I know I will learn SO much!

Who knows what else the Lord will have in store for us in 2007? I look forward to this year and am excited to be making this journey with each of you CWAHMs! Please continue emailing - I love hearing from you! I'll be praying for you each - I know that God knows you each by name (not to mention the number of hairs on your head! (Matthew 10:30). What an awesome God we serve! :)

Blessings in Christ,
Jill

Business Builders From Fellow CWAHMS

* My business is soy-based natural wax candles. I have learned alot of ways to advertise my business without spending alot of money in advertising. Since I keep candles in stock and I also make candle baskets. Instead of spending money on gifts for birthdays, christmas, housewarming, baby showers. I make one of my lovely gift baskets. I make sure I place all my advertising catalogs and business cards in the basket. When I attend these events - other guest at the party love the gift basket and ask me where I purchased it. Ofcourse, with a smile on my face - I tell them I bought it from myself. I proceed to tell them I make candle gift baskets for all occassions. And I have samples and catalogs along with me. Usually people want to know all your information. Having samples has really increased the interest of my candles. And if you want to make a quick sale - have some of your stock on hand when attending these types of parties. And if possible wear a shirt that advertises your website.

* Offer something for free, but ask for something in return or you will end up giving away too much to people who are just looking for a freebie. I offered free samples of my Flameless Soy Aromatherapy Tarts on my web site, and once the "Freebie" sites got wind of the offer, I had over 2000 requests! I gave away 200 free samples, then I had to ask for a small shipping charge to people who were really interested in the Tarts, not just something for free. I had a 500% increase in visitors and almost 1,000 new subscribers to my newsletter.

Get a home-based job without getting scammed

Working from home is a great way to supply the extra income a family needs so that one spouse can stay home and raise the children. But many people are scared away from doing so because of the scams that are prevalent today.

Although it can be hard to tell fact from fiction, it is possible. Many excellent work-at-home opportunities are available. And, it’s well worth the time to explore them so you can start your own business and enjoy the many benefits it provides. Following are several tips to avoid work-at-home scams.

When researching companies that hire home-based workers, the best place to start is the Better Business Bureau (BBB), which can provide information on disputes or other problems involving a potential employer.

You’ll want to look for a pattern of “unresolved” or “unanswered” disputes, which will be an indication that there is a problem with the company in question. By the way, complaints can be filed against a company whether it’s a member of the BBB or not.

Next, perform an Internet search on the company you’re checking out to see what others are saying. If you see a pattern of negative comments, often that’s an indication that you may need to explore the company in more detail.

There also are Web sites such as BBBonline.com that will tell you some of the common scams around, including the “work-from-home typing” scam.

Operators of scams often lure job seekers with promotions such as the ability to earn $35,000 a year, or a promise to provide a list of companies that will hire them.

Diana Ennen, author of Virtual Assistant: The Series has been a home-based word processor more than 20 years. Ennen states, “Working at home as a typist is an excellent opportunity that often only requires excellent secretarial skills. However, be cautious of offers guaranteeing a list of companies that will hire you. The truth of the matter is that most of these companies aren’t even aware they are on this list. There’s so much information available online today that there is no need to fall for this scam.”

It’s also important to know the difference between paying for information about working from home and actually investing in a home-based business. Most home-based businesses, such as direct sales companies, are valid ways to make an income. However, because you need to make an initial investment many people are confused and believe these to be scams as well.

Think about home-based businesses in terms of your local fast-food chain. A fast-food restaurant will pay you if it hires you as an employee. However, in order to start your own franchise of that same restaurant, you would need to make a monetary investment.

The same holds true when you begin a home-based business. You must make an investment, but in return you receive the means to begin your own business—generally the paperwork needed, marketing materials, and product for display.

Still, you must do your research when considering a home-based business. It’s important to know things like the history of the company, its reputation, how many representatives are in your area, and what quotas must be met.

Whether considering a telecommuting position or a home-based business, speak to others who have worked with the company you are contemplating. Ask for references of other employees/business owners in your area.

There are many legitimate ways to work from home, but when seeking a work-at-home opportunity, it’s important to take your time and do your research.

Unfortunately, there are people who make it their primary goal to take money from the unsuspecting. If you are thorough in your examination, you will not become one of their victims. Remember the ages-old saying that still holds true today: If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Featured Recipe

Red Beans & Brown Rice

Growing up in NE Texas and living in Louisiana in my formative years, red beans and rice were a big staple of our diet. My mom used to put large sausage links or pork peices in the beans to make the meat stretch further. But there were also several of the meals that it was just the beans!

Ingredients:
1 pound red or small kidney beans
2 Tbsp. minced garlic
1 large onion, chopped
2-3 tsp. cold pressed virgin olive oil (Bragg's brand is good)
4 C. chicken stock (or water) {recipe from August 9th)
1 tsp. celtic sea salt
Pepper to taste
2-3 Cups Cooked brown rice

Directions:
Soak the beans overnight or 8 hours in cold filtered water, make sure the water is over the beans by a good few inches. {Soaking beans overnight, helps your body digest the beans later when you are eating them, the it helps to release the gases that are trapped in the dried beans.} Null or bad beans will float to the top, just take those out and then drain after the soaking.
In a large pot or dutch oven, saute the garlic and onion in the olive oil until tender. Add chicken stock, beans and salt to the pot. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer on low heat for 2-3 hours.
Serve in large bowls, over cooked brown rice. Season to your taste with salt and pepper or creole seasoning. Some people also like to drizzle a tiny bit of olive oil on top of the beans, it gives it an even better flavor and makes the dish look nicer.

{For creole seasoning, if you can find it, try Tony Chachere's creole seasoning. I usually by a large container when I visit my mom in Louisiana, but lately I've been able to find it at Cost Plus/World Market stores}.

Featured Craft
Paper Bag Hats

Here's one of our favorite ways to turn around a dull day: make silly hats for no reason at all. Our design, made out of paper bags and basic art supplies, allows plenty of room for kids' creative touches.

MATERIALS:
Paper bags, standard grocery size or slightly smaller
Tape (double-sided and clear)
Pom-poms, googly eyes, feathers, pipe cleaners, and other craft supplies
Construction paper
Scissors
Hole punch
Green curling ribbon

Time needed: About 1 to 2 Hours

1. Help each child gently roll down the top of a bag until it reaches the hat size she wants to wear. Have her try it on for size, pinch the brim to adjust the fit, then tape it in place.

2. Now set out craft materials for decorating the hats. Kids can make them as simple or as elaborate as they like using double-sided tape to attach pom-poms, googly eyes, and feathers.

3. For antennae, coil a pipe cleaner around a pencil, then tape on a large pom-pom. Poke the end of the pipe cleaner through the hat and secure it on the inside with tape.

4. Cut a flower shape out of construction paper. Punch 2 holes in its center and thread green curling ribbon through the holes. Use scissors to curl the ribbon, then stick the flower to the hat with double-sided tape.
