It's almost St. Patrick's Day. In our country, St. Patricks Day is celebrated as an excuse to "party," but did you know that St. Patrick was a historical Christian figure?

From History.com:

St. Patrick is believed to have driven the snakes from Ireland. Once a pagan himself, St. Patrick is one of Christianity's most widely known figures.

The modern secular holiday is based on the original Christian saint's feast day also thought to be the date of the saint's death. In 1737, Irish immigrants to the United States began observing the holiday publicly in Boston and held the first St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York City in 1766.

Today, the tradition continues with people from all walks and heritages by wearing green, eating Irish food, and attending parades. St. Patrick's Day is bursting with folklore; from the shamrock to the leprechaun and to pinching those that are not wearing green.

Take time this St. Patricks' Day to celebrate the man behind the holiday!

Blessings,
Jill

Business Builders

From Fellow CWAHMS

* My business cards have my web address on them and I use them to help advertise my business and online shoppe in creative ways. They are a bright green color so they stand out and have a cute dragon on them (which people take just because the dragon is cute.....I've had people tell me they did it after they finally visited my shop) along with my store name, address and phone number, and a description of what I sell. I check out a lot of library books and a lot of library books on Library Loan from other libraries.

I always make sure and "accidentally" leave a business card tucked safely between some pages in the book as a bookmark. I also do this when we visit libraries in other towns, leaving a business card in the book I am looking through. When we go on trips I leave my business cards in women's restrooms at gas stations and and restaurants, on bulletin boards, and even in motel rooms. I have left them on the table with my tip when I eat out in a different town. Sometimes I "accidentally" drop them on the ground for someone to pick up.

I'm always looking for creative ways to distribute my business cards.

* There are many home businesses that you can actually work 2 ways:

Warm Market ~ Advertise your home business with flyers, business cards, local newspaper ads, and more. I always leave a business cards no matter what my location is. You need to get into a habit of leaving something everywhere you go about your business. I also have my home business information on my van that I drive around all the time. I have had many go to my website. My van reads Work From Home with your Computer and Phone & Website.

Internet ~ The internet is another way your can work your business. I purchase leads from various leads companies. These leads come from people all over the US. They are looking to find a home business and they fill out a survey. Those leads are then sold to people like myself who are working leads. I have had great success in the last year just from leads. There are many different types of leads so dont just stick to one kind. Another way to work your business on line is free advertising, classifieds, etc. You can use message boards, blogs, etc. Yahoo groups, etc. Find a site that you have the same interest in. Once you get established with talking with people on those message boards or groups then you can approach them about your home business. Always read the rules on those sites.

Best of Luck with your Warm Market and On-line!

Tax Tips for the Home-based Business Owner

Tax season is one of the most nerve-wracking times of the year. From putting together all of the necessary tax documents to finding the right accountant, taxes can be time-consuming, frustrating, and a major challenge. Add in a home-based business and taxes can be downright overwhelming. However, there are some things you can do to make your tax season a breeze.

Choose your accountant wisely
One of the most important decisions you’ll make as a business owner is who you will choose to help you with your bookkeeping and accounting needs. Research accountants in your area and look for one that specializes in small business taxes. Ask if they will prepare both corporate and personal returns if needed. Make sure your accountant is clear on how they charge for their time – especially for questions over the phone.

I once worked with accountants who worked with large corporations. They were used to having very little contact with their clients, however with a new corporation I had many questions about how things worked. Needless to say it didn’t go well. Our current accountant specializes in small businesses and is available by phone or email if I have a question.

Set up your business accounts properly
I was told early in my business career that I must make sure to keep my business accounts and personal accounts separate. When I first began running my own business I simply added a second checking account to use for business purposes. There was no cost to do so I was able to set my income aside in this separate account.

I also set up a savings account to set aside my taxes each month. This was a big help at the end of the year knowing that all of my taxes were set aside and I could relax instead of scrambling to come up with the money.

Keep good records
Another way to keep tax season stress-free is to keep business receipts throughout the year. I keep a separate file in the filing cabinet next to my desk just for this purpose. This way I have everything in one place when tax season arrives. If you don't have room for a filing cabinet, consider an expandable folder categorized A – Z. That way you can still divide up the taxes by topic, and won't have to do that come tax season.

Keep records of your business expenses throughout the year. Request a list of items from your accountant or tax professional, so that you will know what items to track. Be sure to ask what counts as “business expenses.” There are certain deductions that you can take for your home, car, and utilities. Consult your tax professional about these deductions.

Know Your Tax Facts
It's important to know the date that your taxes are due. Many S corporations are surprised when they discover that some of their tax forms need to be filed by March 15th and not April 15th. Another surprise to some home-based businesses is that if you pay subcontractors over $600.00 a year, you need to send them a 1099 by the end of January.

There are many places online to find more information about taxes. One great place to find more information is the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website at www.irs.gov. They have sections with helpful information on both personal and business taxes. They also list contact information for local IRS offices where you can also find help.

Don’t ignore the taxes involved with running a home-based business and hope it will all work itself out. It takes planning and effort to be prepared for tax season. Do your homework when it comes to taxes and find an accountant that you trust to guide you through the tax maze. With the right preparation and help your tax season can be stress-free.

Featured Craft
Lion and Lamb Note Holders

Teach your kids the art of quilling, a decorative paper-rolling technique, then round up a set of these message-bearing spring icons.

MATERIALS:
Colored paper
Toothpick
Card stock
Glue
Googly eyes
Clothes pins (2 per note holder)
Magnetic strip (optional)

Time needed: About 2 to 3 Hours

1. For each, start by cutting a few dozen 1/8-inch-wide strips of colored paper, each at least 4 inches long. Curl each strip tightly around a toothpick.

2. Next, cover a rounded, 3-inch card stock body with glue and attach the curls. Cut out a card stock face and ears, adding googly eyes and other facial features, and glue them all in place. Allow the glue to dry.

3. For the legs, which also serve as note holders, glue 2 clothespins to the back of the body. Stand the critter on a table or attach magnetic strips to the back and stick it to your fridge, then post your message in the clips.
