15 Minutes For Mom

Five Ways to entertain your kids: (part 5)

#5 -TV time

On the days when your child is sick or it is too cold to play outside, consider allowing them to watch a movie or an allotted amount of TV time. Most children’s movies are kept short to keep their attention and are also educational. Find movies and TV programs that meet your approval and adhere to your morals and beliefs.

Working from home and being there for your children is one of the best gifts that you can give them. However, there are always times when you will need the little ones quiet while you complete necessary tasks. Use these five ideas to take the stress out of finding quiet time.

Tune in next week!

Business Builders

From Fellow CWAHMS

* My business building tip is to just live it! What I mean is I have a list of priorities, the first being to God, then my family, and last comes my business. I work around those priorities and it seems to keep balance. I talk with people, ask them about themselves first before I talk about myself. I love to see what walks of life people are in. I myself am a military wife and mother of 2 girls 11 and 12. You would think that would make it easier to build my business, but it actually makes it hard at times because of the constant moving you need to rebuild your instant retail clients. I find that getting out to the schools early to pick up the girls you have time to talk to the other parents. (It doesn't hurt to have a sign on your car for your business and plenty of catalogs, samples and brochures in the car AT ALL TIMES!) Because I am in the nutritional industry it helps to always listen! In the store, in line, in the bank, etc. all the needs of everyone are at your ear's reach. Also when you are talking with someone you need to listen for their specific need, money, to stay home with kids, more freedom, vacation, LISTEN TWICE AS MUCH AS YOU TALK .. 2 ears, one mouth. Make sure to always hold the door for someone, and smile alot. Trust me.. people notice!

* I have a few tips I’d like to share with the business builders. For those who grow their businesses through networking and/or referrals, how many times have you made a contact or collected a business card, but failed to follow up with the person? Follow up is key! Make it a point to send an email or make a phone call within a few days of meeting the person. Remind them where you met them, give them a few details on your business or the services you provide, offer to help them grow their business by making referrals to them. Ask them to refer anyone they know to you who may be looking for your type of business! Who knows, they may be that person, but you never have to worry about feeling pushy if you keep the request general.

Here is another: Can’t find enough networking events to attend to promote your business? Then create your own! You can find a local coffee shop who is willing to let you have a small group come for an hour or two in the evening and hold an informal meeting. Send out invitations to your “Power Coffee” to other entrepreneurs or people looking for clients, and give everyone 3 minutes to promote their business. The rest of the time can be used for meet and greet. By limiting it to one person per business category, you can avoid competition.

Thanks! I really like the business builders tips. They are very useful. I am so glad I found your site.

Telecommuting - Five Ways To Find Your Next Job

The trend of telecommuting is on the rise as employers begin to see the savings involved in both gas and office space. With gas prices at an all-time high, many Americans are looking for ways to do less driving and more companies than ever before are offering telecommuting options to their current employees and searching for at-home employees to fill open positions. The question for the job seeker is now how to find these opportunities. Below are five methods you can use to find a telecommuting position.

First, check your local newspaper. When I began my search for an at-home career, I found my first employer through the Classified Ads section of our hometown paper. I was wary at first, but after thoroughly researching the company through means such as the Better Business Bureau (BBB), visiting the corporate office and meeting some of their current employees I found the company to be legitimate.

Second, search online using website such as Monster.com and Dice.com. However, listings found online must be researched carefully to avoid the scams that abound on the Internet. There are also websites that will you allow to do job research in your own community. One such website is Craigslist.com on which you can choose a city and then refine your search with keywords such as “telecommute.”

Posting your resume on websites such as Hotjobs.com is a third way to locate at work-at-home job. Putting your resume online can bring employers to you, depending on your skills and qualifications. Another bonus of an online resume is that you can easily direct prospective employers to view it. It also makes life a bit simpler when applying for jobs, because you can attach your online resume instead of typing out your job history, qualifications, and so on, each time you apply for a job.

When posting your resume on the web, be sure to create an accurate and impressive representation of your abilities. You don’t want to be wordy when describing past job experience, but you do want to be specific about the roles you’ve held as well as your accomplishments.

A fourth option when looking for at-home employment is to open a phone book and call businesses in your area. For example, if you’re interested in doing administrative work, you might contact churches and small businesses in your area to see if they are looking for office help. Even if they are not currently seeking help, they may know of another business owner who is.

Along those same lines, the fifth way to become a telecommuter is to create your own opportunity. For example, instead of finding a company that will hire you as an administrative assistant from home, consider starting your own business as a Virtual Assistant. You can offer your services to many companies, which can both increase your income potential and allow you the flexibility of deciding which jobs you’d like to accept.

You can also create your own telecommuting position by talking with your current employer about work-at-home possibilities. More and more companies are finding that at-home employees are just as productive as those in the office, if not more. Companies also benefit financially by lessening office space and avoiding the costs of many office supplies. Many companies who are not ready to hire at-home workers will allow their current employees to work one or two days from a home office, so be sure to discuss this option.

The telecommuting field has become highly competitive as more and more people find that working from home is a possibility. Searching for a telecommuting position can be daunting, but by looking in strategic places such as online and in your local newspaper, you’ll have a much better chance. No matter, how you find your telecommuting position, make sure it’s something you would enjoy doing and also something you can make money at.

Featured Recipe

SEAFOAM CANDY

1 cup sugar
1 cup dark corn syrup
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 tablespoon baking soda
Bag of your favorite chocolate chips

Combine sugar, syrup, and vinegar in heavy sauce pan. Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Then cook to 300 F. or crack stage (test it in a glass of water...dribble a little in it. It’s ready when it gets brittle in the glass of water!) Remove from heat. Stir soda in quickly, mixing up. (It will become frothy.) Pour into buttered pan. Cool and break into pieces. Melt some chocolate chips and dip it, set it on a buttered pan in the fridge to set the chocolate.

Featured Craft
Personalized Hobby Boxes

Make something special for that someone special, be it a parent, sibling or friend. A personalized hobby box, decorated or filled with little treasures, is sure to fit the bill.

MATERIALS:
Wooden boxes (sold at craft stores)
Fine-grain sandpaper
Latex wood primer
Acrylic paints and paintbrushes
Acrylic varnish
Felt
Hot glue gun
Assorted items, such as costume jewelry, foreign coins, or golf tees

Time needed: Under 1 Hour

1. To prepare the box for painting, lightly sand the wood and then brush a coat of primer on all its surfaces. Once the sealer dries, lightly sand the box once more.

2. Paint the box. This will have to be done in stages (the inside first, the bottom next, and the top and sides last), allowing the paint to dry each time.

3. To paint multicolored stripes, as shown on the pencil box, apply strips of Easy Mask KleenEdge tape (sold in most craft or paint stores) in a parallel pattern and paint between them. When the paint dries, remove the tape (it won't peel off the paint), tape over the freshly painted areas and paint new stripes between them. Once the paint dries, apply a coat of acrylic varnish to protect and enhance the colors and let it dry completely.

4. Next, glue a felt liner to the inside of the box. Then glue decorative items that reflect the recipient's interests onto the top. With items that are hard to stick, try gluing bits of felt to the bottoms and then gluing the felt to the box.

Featured Book

I LOVE to read! Each week you'll find a new Christian book here!

The Heir
by Paul Robertson

As he stares at his father’s casket, Jason Boyer has no idea how much his life has just changed. He wasn’t all that close to his father and he’s not honestly sure that he’ll even miss him. Then he learns that in a twist of fate, his father’s fortune has been left entirely to him. The problem? Jason doesn’t want the money – or the responsibility that goes with it.

As Jake enters the corrupt world that his father lived in, he finds that he may be more like his father than he would care to admit. Can Jason handle the pressure of being a billionaire? Does he have what it takes to live in this world – or will it cost him everything?

Paul Robertson gives readers a glimpse into the lives of the rich and powerful. He skillfully crafts a story that is both suspenseful and believable. When he’s not writing, Robertson is a computer programmer and part-time teacher. The Heir, his first novel, is a powerful start to what will hopefully become a long-term career.

I enjoyed The Heir immensely. The one thing that I felt could have been stronger is the faith aspect. I felt that it could have been a little more deeply developed during the story and better defined in the end. I’m afraid it might leave non-believers with more questions than answers. But, then again, maybe that was the point. ? The Heir is well written and the characters are well developed. The reader will feel like they’re in the midst of the chaos that the characters are dealing with. In the end, though, hope shines through and the reader will have plenty of eternal questions to think on.
