15 Minutes For Mom

Five Reasons Podcasting Might Be Right
For Your Home-based Business: (part 4)

#4 - Become an “Expert” in your field – Creating a podcast can help to establish you as an “expert” in the area your broadcast covers. You must be willing to take the time, do the research and share information that is valuable and useful to your listeners.

Just as authors become experts by researching and writing on specific topics, podcasters become experts by sharing the information they find with their listening audience. There is a big market for podcasts in a multitude of areas – the next expert could be YOU!

Tune in next week!

Business Builders

From Fellow CWAHMS

*One way I grow my business is with free business card magnets. I got them at www.vistaprint.com for just the price of shipping. Not everyone I meet needs my services as a Travel Specialist at that moment but most of them are planning a trip within the next year. Handing them a magnet allows them to keep my name and web site info handy without having to hunt down my business card. I find that by offering a magnet, it reduces the pressure some feel to make an immediate decision and many of them are eager to get on my Travel Specials email list!

* Thanks for your very informative newsletter. I appreciate it greatly!

I have found it a great business builder to REWARD my referring customers. For instance, I met with my local computer repair store about designing a brochure and website for them and although they have yet to take me up on it, they refer me to other people all the time. Each time one of their referrals results in a sale, I send them a thank you card and small gift-such as a $10.00 coffee card. And I make sure to email them once in awhile to point them to new samples as I complete more work.

Here's another: I first GIVE MY BUSINESS to those whom I would like business from. Before I obtained a clothing store as a client, I shopped there. And before I approached the computer store, I had my computer repaired there and made sure that I mentioned it when I called on them.

* I have an on-line business and communicate with my customers through e-mail correspondence only. Because my items are personalized and custom made, customers are required to send me information regarding size, color, personalization information, etc. If they are missing any information, I make sure to contact them immediately for the information. I contact the customer as soon as they place the order and to let them know the item has been shipped. I have had lots of feedback from customers thanking me for my quick and pleasant responses.

I believe it's important to make an extra effort to communicate in a pleasant, courteous and professional manner. Because it is difficult to determine someone's emotions through writing, I always include lots of exclamation marks to show enthusiasm and interest. I also make sure to thank my customers each time I correspond with them.

WAHM's: How to Balance Work & Family

One of the challenges faced by work at home moms is balancing their work and family. There is always the danger of work swallowing up all of your family time, or having your family time interrupt your business.

I heard a story a while back, that I think illustrates the best way to balance the two. And, it goes like this...

First, think of your life as a jar.

Second, think of those things that are most important to you. This might include things like your family, your career, your free time, and your health. Now picture these important things as large rocks.

Next, think of all the other things that take up time in your life. Cleaning the house, running errands, answering email, doing laundry, watching TV. All those things that take up time, but are not what's most important to you. I want you to picture these things as sand.

Now, take your jar. Fill it up with your sand. And then, ask yourself, can I still fit my big rocks into the jar? Chances are you cannot - because your sand has taken up all of the space.

This is what many people do with their life. They busy themselves with all of the little things. And then, they don't have time left for what's most important.

Here is how I want you to fill YOUR jar.

FIRST, put in your big rocks. Schedule time for what's most important to you.

Then, pour in your sand. A funny thing happens. The sand fills in all of the little spaces left over in the jar. Suddenly, BOTH the rocks and the sand fit in the jar!

Once you have scheduled your most important things, you can fill in the time that's left with your "sand" - all those other things that you CAN do, but that aren't most important to you.

Now, you may be thinking, but I have to do my laundry and clean my house and run my errands. Yes, some of these things may need to be done. But in what priority? And, do YOU have to be the one doing them?

When I learned how to "let go" of the little stuff (my sand) and focus on the important things I wanted to spend my time on, I became much happier, healthier AND my business started to grow.

And, not only that, I began to enjoy the journey.

You may not be a 6FigureWAHM yet, but as you take steps to become one, remember to enjoy every day along the way. The saddest thing that can happen is to finally get there and realize you sacrificed what was most important along the way.

The role of Super Mom is highly over-rated, and highly unrealistic. Give up on your ideals of how you THINK your life should be, and what you think you SHOULD be able to do, and focus on doing what's most important to you.

If you can do this, I think you'll find it's much easier to balance your work and family.

Featured Craft
No-Sew Pillowcase Skirt

Trendsetters won't be able to resist the creative trick of transforming a pillowcase into a sassy skirt (or beach cover-up). Be sure that the case your child chooses won't be see-through, and consider that cases with a decorative edge offer a fabulous instant hem detail. If the case is brand new, preshrink it before you begin.

MATERIALS:
Pillowcase
Yardstick
Tailors' chalk or a pencil
Scissors
Small paintbrush
Washable fabric glue (available at craft stores; we used Fabri-Tac glue)
Clear nail polish
Safety pin
45-inch cotton drawstring

Time needed: About 1 to 2 Hours

1. Decide on the length (one way is to measure the length of a skirt your child likes). Add 1 1/2 inches for a casing to that measurement. Use that total to measure from the open edge of the pillowcase (which will be the hem) and use tailor's chalk or a pencil and a yardstick to mark a straight line across the case. Cut along the line. Discard the closed end of the pillowcase. Turn the skirt piece inside out.

2. Iron (adult supervision recommended) down 1/2 inch along the cut edge.

3. Along the same edge, iron down an additional 1 inch.

4. Place cardboard under the pillowcase to protect the ironing board from potential glue spills. Lift the casing and use a small brush to apply washable fabric glue (adult supervision recommended) along the 1/2-inch edge of the casing. (Tip: This is easy if you drape the skirt around the ironing board and rotate it as you go.) Fold the glued edge back down to form the casing. Use your fingers to press it in place. After the glue dries, turn the skirt right side out.

5. At the center front of the casing, apply a line of clear nail polish (supervise younger kids). Let it dry and reapply.

6. When the second coat is dry, cut a slit for the drawstring. Be sure to go through just 1 layer of fabric, and stay within the boundaries of the polish.

7. Attach a safety pin to one end of the drawstring and feed it through the casing. Knot the ends of the drawstring, and the skirt's ready to wear.

Featured Book

I LOVE to read!
Each week you'll find a new Christian book here!

Why Not You?: Twenty-eight Days to Authentic Confidence
by Valorie Burton

Why Not You? is a guide book for those of us who struggle with self-confidence. Burton gives real life examples of issues that many of us face. She gives step-by-step, biblically based instructions for overcoming whatever it might be that holds you back from experiencing freedom.

Readers will find Burton’s writing to be thought provoking and her advice to be realistic. She helps the reader to set attainable goals while allowing them to hash out issues that they are struggling with in the fill-in-the-blank space provided within the book. Why Not You? challenges many of the lies we are fed by the media and modern culture such as, “You’re only successful if you’re rich.”

Burton ends each chapter by bringing it all before the Lord, who we can each find our confidence in. If you struggle with self-confidence and are looking for a way to overcome, this book will lead you down the right path. Readers will finish the book with not only the tools to overcome self-doubt, but with a stronger understanding of their spiritual walk as well.
