15 Minutes For Mom

Five Reasons Podcasting Might Be Right
For Your Home-based Business: (part 5)

#5 -It’s easy - A podcast can be started with virtually no cost or investment. In most cases, there is no need to be “tech savvy” to be a podcast creator. It can be as simple as using a phone to record your podcast through a service like Odeo.com. There are, of course, more complicated set-ups, but to begin you truly just need a topic, a phone and a quiet spot to record!

Podcasting is easy for listeners as well. A podcast can be listened to directly from a website or downloaded from iTunes and put directly on an MP3 device.

There are many reasons that a podcast can benefit small and home-based businesses. This growing market is an entirely new way to communicate information to the world. When it comes to podcasting, the sky’s the limit!

Business Builders

From Fellow CWAHMS

* Work your clothes so they Work for you.

We have all heard the old saying, “Dress The Part”. It’s true, however, dressing the part works for dressing up and down. Everyone knows that if you attend a business network meeting, most likely it will be a business attire situation, unless specified otherwise. In my business, the last thing I would ever wear to my workshops is a business suit. You see, my business is instructing people, mostly children, how to hand stuff their own cuddly animals. Fun business, but not if I was in a business suit and high heels. Not only would I trip over everything (I haven’t worn heels in a long time) but the children would probably look at me like I was crazy! I doubt they would be impressed, and I would not portray the fun atmosphere that I should in my business.

So what do I wear to a workshop? I have a brightly colored polo shirt with my company’s logo embroidered on it. I wear that, jeans, tennis shoes and a nametag so the kids know my name. It makes kids feel comfortable around me. Now, would I wear that to a network meeting, absolutely not! This might seem obvious to some, but it still floors me when I see someone trying to run a business and they don’t portray “The Look” that bests represents their company.

A perfect example: I met a lady the other day at a WAHM network meeting representing a well known skin care and makeup line. Her hair was messy (just thrown up in a clip) she had on unattractive clothes and NO makeup! Usually, not a big deal, but she was representing a skin care and makeup line at a network meeting. Though I know it’s a great product, her presentation of it, didn’t make me WANT to try it nor did I feel she was knowledgeable in this field, so in turn, I would not be comfortable trusting my skin care needs to her. (I don’t mean to sound unkind; I am just trying to prove a point.) Does this mean the skin care consultant always has to look perfect? No. If she is in the park with her kids having a family time, I say why bother. Even if she meets another mom and starts chatting about her work, I think it’s still ok. The other mom would not expect the skin care consultant to be dressed up and makeup perfect.

However, if you are pursuing leads for your business or representing it at a meeting, social, etc. make sure you portray “The Look” that best represents your professionalism in your field. This will bring trust into your connections with other people, as well as give you confidence about yourself. If you feel confident, you will feel comfortable as well and you can concentrate on your “pitch” not your clothes. So next time you get dressed, think about how you want to portray your business and work your clothes so they work for you!

Tip: Having trouble deciding if you have the right look? Take a picture! Looking in the mirror is an obvious thing we have to do but the way we see ourselves is not always the way others see us. Taking a picture really gives you another person’s perspective.

* As a the owner of a brand new business, it is my goal to get my name out there so that people know I am online and open for business. There are several things I do to accomplish this goal. One of the most important things is to make sure I have professional looking marketing materials, like business cards and flyers/brochures. Once I have those, I carry them with me everywhere and hand them out to everyone. I also have become a apart of an exchange group where I send my fillers (business cards, samples, etc.) to other working mothers around the country, and they send me theirs. I then put all their fillers in packs, along with more of my own, and pass them out to people, send them out with orders, and give them out at vendor events. Not only does this get my name out there, but it also helps others get their names out there as well.

I also donate items and gift certificates to different causes. Though this does cost me a small amount of money initially, it also helps to get my name out there. I always make sure to include several business cards with any donation that I make. Many times the organization coordinating the fundraiser and donations will list the donating companies in printed materials or online, which then gives me more exposure.

Teleseminars: Five Tips For Getting Your Moneys Worth

Teleseminars are a great way to learn from experts without leaving the comfort of your home. No travel expenses, jet lag or cafeteria food to deal with makes them the perfect way for work-at-home moms to expand their business knowledge and skills.

More and more experts and authors are offering teleseminars on topics such as business, marketing, advertising and more. Many of these subjects are of interest, but can we as business owners really learn enough to make it worth the time and expense? In short, yes. However, there are a few important steps you should take when attending a teleseminar.

Make sure the speaker is qualified.
It’s fairly simple to set up a teleseminar and virtually anyone could do put one together. So, before investing in a seminar, do some quick research on the speaker(s) to be sure they are experienced in the areas they will be covering. Search for their name using a search engine such as Google or Yahoo and see what results are returned. Also, if they have authored a book, take a look on Amazon and read any reviews/comments posted there.

Take notes.
If you’re like me, you have multiple projects on your mind, as well as your children, spouse, etc. With all of the information running through my brain, I tend to recall very little of what I hear during the day, even if it’s good information. In order to retain the information given during a teleseminar, don’t just sit and soak it up. Make the effort to listen closely and take notes. You’ll remember more of what was discussed and you’ll be able to refer to your notes in the future if necessary.

Speak up.
A teleseminar is similar to a massive conference call with one main person speaking. Because of the size and the virtual setting, many people feel unsure about speaking up and asking questions. However, you’ll do both yourself and the speaker a favor by voicing your thoughts when appropriate and asking honest questions. Chances are good that others in the group have the same questions and will appreciate you stepping out and asking. Do be careful not to ask too many questions. This isn’t a personal training session and if too many questions are asked, especially by the same person, the speaker doesn’t get to cover all the material they have planned.

Enlist a Friend.
What better way to get the most out of a seminar than to take it with a friend? If you have a friend of colleague that is interested, you can both participate in the teleseminar it will give you a great topic for discussion afterwards. I tend to learn more from discussions post-seminar than I do while listening to the lecture. I think talking it over with another attendee helps me to process the information and see how it applies to my daily life and business.

Follow up.
If a teleseminar is especially helpful to you, send a thank-you to the speaker. Try to send a written note or if this is not possible, an email will do. By making contact with the speaker and showing your appreciation you’re not only providing encouragement, you are networking. You just never know what type of response you might receive and you may even make a new friend or find a mentor.

The key to getting the most out of teleseminars is to find the ones that are by true experts in their field and that interest you the most. So, the next time you find a teleseminar that catches your interest, gather up your pen and paper and tune in. If you can find a colleague that interested in joining you, you’ll be all the better for it. You’ll learn more and have more fun in the process.

Featured Book

I LOVE to read!
Each week you'll find a new Christian book here!

Sarah Claire Winowski is a small-town hairdresser with big dreams. She joins her successful cousin in California to carve out a new life for herself. Los Angeles, however, may be more than Sarah Claire bargained for.

After being told to change her name, her clothes and the way she talks, she's not sure she's cut out for the lifestyle she longs for. The one bright spot in her future may be her cousin's roommate, but she not so sure about him, either.

When she meets her new boss it confirms her worst fears. Can she really take months of getting coffee for a boss she can't stand? Her boss, Yoshi, may be one of the best hairdressers in L.A., but Sarah isn't sure she can stick it out long enough to learn what he has to teach her. Sarah must struggle to find herself and figure out if her dreams are worth the cost.

Award-winning author Kristin Billerbeck's newest novel is a great read from cover to cover. The story is both funny and serious and Billerbeck gives readers the perfect dose of both. I found myself cheering for Sarah throughout the novel and trying to decide what I would do if I was in her shoes. It's an easy read and yet will get the reader thinking about what's most important in life.
