Hi,

Does anyone here do math every day? I am thinking of cutting back on when we do math to concentrate on other subjects. My children are 11 & 12 and it seems there are so many subjects to cover but doing the "basics" every day at times leaves little room for other projects/subjects and it is taking the fun out of homeschooling.

Now my children are getting older I am concerned that they are not learning everything they should. Does anyone have advice?

Lorraine, if you are concerned about what they should know, you might have them take and acheivement or placement test and see where they rate across the board. This might help in seeing what areas to put more focus into and what areas to put less. For us Bible is an absolute every day, followed by the "3 Rs" (reading, writing, arithmatic) and with our spelling program, spelling is pretty much an every day, but only takes 5-10 minutes per day. We use Math-U-See (love it!!!) for math and it usually is only a 10-15 per day at the 4th grade level.

But the beauty of homeschooling is you can adjust to spend more time where needed and less time where only maintainance is improtant for maintaining skills. So decide if your kids are where you want them to be at this stage and if they are "there" or ahead of your goals for this season, I would think a couple of days a week is sufficient. I remember in jr. high in a traditional classroom there were several subjects that we only did 2-3 days a week (often alternating 2 subjects between the same timeslot on different days of the week), so you certainly have this freedom! Oh, and when our co-op is in session, we do very little "regular" school work that day because they are already in outside classes 2-3 hours away from home that day.
